Having spent 7 days in deepest darkest Dorset, without either a mobile phone signal or broadband I am now able to update my blog from The Slice of Lime Café in Budleigh Salterton.
Dorset home of two Hardy's Thomas the novelist and Lord Nelson's famous companion was a beautiful setting for a weeks holiday. Quaint villages with thatched cottages, a spectacular coastline and miles quiet lanes for cycling. Dorset seemed quieter and less discovered than Devon and Cornwall.
I cycled about 110 miles last week and found some fantastic lanes from the Ordnance Survey Landranger map 194. There was one challenge during the week, hills. I found one flat three mile stretch of Roman road that resembled cycling in Cheshire and the other 103 miles were either up or down. I managed to reach 41mph on one downhill section and on the toughest uphill 3mph. I need to get in a few more miles this week in Devon if I'm going to be able to cope with the first few days of LEJOG which are supposed to be the hardest.
Martin the bike managed the ups and downs far better than my legs, although I had to replace the brake blocks and a mudguard bolt from Dorchester Cycles whose service was excellent.
